I’ve been co-teaching a literature classics class and our recent read was Tuck Everlasting. I’ve seen the movies so I pretty much already knew the story but had never actually read the book. I have to admit that I was curious if it would end differently. It did not. In many ways, I completely understand why Winnie’s choice in the end but I did find myself feeling rather sad for Jesse and the entire Tuck family. I certainly found myself feeling sorry for Miles who quite nearly had something akin to a normal life within his grasp just to have it slip away.

The story itself is a fairly quick, easy, and interesting read and certainly one I would recommend. It begs the question if you had immortality within reach, would you take it? The Tuck family considers it a curse to stop the wheel of life and be robbed of a precious death. I think I would have to agree with them.

Tuck Everlasting by Dreamyth

“But dying’s part of the wheel, right there next to being born.
You can’t pick out the pieces you like and leave the rest.
Being part of the whole thing, that’s the blessing.”

What if you could live forever?

Is eternal life a blessing or a curse? That is what young Winnie Foster must decide when she discovers a spring on her family’s property whose waters grant immortality. Members of the Tuck family, having drunk from the spring, tell Winnie of their experiences watching life go by and never growing older.

But then Winnie must decide whether or not to keep the Tucks’ secret―and whether or not to join them on their never-ending journey.
