It is crazy/scary/unnerving how quickly an accident can happen. One minute I am walking my sister’s dog in the park, the next I am on the ground with a dislocated shoulder socket and an oblique break of my upper humerus. One surgery, one shoulder plate, several pins in my arm, and thirteen weeks of therapy later, I am on the mend. I don’t have my full range of motion, but my doctor says this could take several months.
So please forgive me if this is short – typing is still painful.
During my convalescence, I intended to go full Nerd mode. Squid Games, Stranger Things marathon, Shadow and Bones Season 2, the complete Harry Potter book series… I didn’t do any of these things. Unfortunately, between pain pills, muscle relaxers, workout sessions, and actual pain, my attention span was non-existent. I basically watched YouTube videos the whole time. Good news – I have completely reimagined my pantry and kitchen cabinets! Bad news – I need about $1,000,000 to accomplish my dreams! And a kitchen the size of a Home Depot warehouse.
**On a side note – if you like creepy horror movies, I totally recommend a 2019 Netflix movie starring Helen Hunt called I See You. My goosebumps had goosebumps. I had to watch the Golden Girls before I could go to sleep!**
For my book review, I decided to go with a Stephen King book called The Outsider. Published in 2018, this story follows Terry Maitland, an adored father, husband, teacher, and Little League coach. In his hometown of Flint City, a young boy is brutally murdered and violated. Once the body is found, Maitland becomes the prime suspect. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints unequivocally put him at the scene. But eyewitnesses and fingerprints also put Maitland at a teacher’s conference several hours away at the same time.
How can he be in two places at once? Well, it is a Stephen King novel, so anything is possible! This book started out strong – I was worried about Maitland and his family. It does spin off into true King territory but I stayed entertained and involved for the whole book.
**On a second side note – Did you know that for several decades, Stephen King has sold the rights to some of his short stories for $1? He does this to help students and aspiring filmmakers have access to his stories and help them establish themselves. The program is known as The Dollar Baby program. Details are available through his website https://stephenking.com/dollarbaby/. Just another reason I love this writer!
