By Kathy Cheek
A lady at my church who lived alone had undergone foot surgery and needed meals provided for her during the recuperation process.
I happily signed the list and made my meal and set up a time to take it to her house. I thought I would just be dropping the meal off but she asked me to stay and chat and it didn’t take long to realize what she was hungry for that day was more than a meal. She was hungry for fellowship.
I will admit I learned a lot about her that day. She was in quite the talkative mood and I did much listening to a lonely person who needed a listening ear. I enjoyed her stories of life growing up in a military family and all the moves and different schools she went to. I also learned many lessons in plant care as she was in the process of becoming a Master Gardener.
The late afternoon shadows fell across her living room through the big windows over the couch and suddenly I became aware that I had been there far longer than I realized. My husband texted inquiring why I wasn’t back home yet—he had started to worry while I had lost track of time.
Lisa said, “Oh, I had no idea how much time had passed! I guess you can tell I needed the company. Thank you for staying so long this afternoon.”
She said she had worked up an appetite after all the talking and I pulled my food out of the refrigerator and warmed it up in the microwave for her. I could see multiple storage containers where others had also brought her food and I wondered if any of them had stayed for a long visit.
I asked her if she had enough people signed up to bring her meals while her foot healed and she said yes. Lisa also admitted I was the only one that had stayed to visit and how much it meant to her. I hugged her and said I would be glad to come back over with food…and for another long visit anytime!

What a beautiful reminder to show kindness. Thank you for sharing!
A visit can truly change the day. Notes, meals, phone calls and visits can help. A person may not ask for these things, but by doing these small acts of kindness, we are showing God’s love. 🙂
