This month I’m spotlighting my church and a special event that takes place each February…
The Bridge Christian Fellowship (An SBC fellowship)
The Chest of Joash
In Second Chronicles, chapter 24, we find an interesting story about King Joash. The king decided to collect money to repair the temple of the Lord. He placed a chest outside at the gate of the temple of the Lord to receive the offerings given by the people. When the chest filled up, the priests would dump it and start again.
At The Bridge, we start collecting offerings in a small chest set at the altar on the Sunday following the Super Bowl. But instead of using the money to repair the church, we use it for outreach in our surrounding community. One of these outreaches is Operation Warm Up which provides heaters for people in need. We also give toward various community outreaches already in progress, plus helping individuals and families as we find needs.
The seven weeks of giving is a special time at our church and there’s just something about helping our community that warms the hearts of the people at The Bridge.
Does your church or civic organization have an outreach you’d like me to talk about in our monthly spotlight or regular Small Acts of Kindness segment? I’d love to hear about it…
Jennifer,
I think that’s a wonderful idea, and especially so to involve your church.
There’s something similar that we do as a family, although on a much miner scale.
We have a Tzedakah-box in which unexpected change found laying around, in the laundry or wherever, is placed and when it’s full, it is tithed.
Thanks for this wonderful story,
Pat
I like that idea, Patricia. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by…
