Hello, Friday Fiction Fans! I hope you’ve enjoyed all the books we’ve shared so far in 2022. My choice for today is a YA pirate adventure. Who doesn’t love a good pirate story? And No Good Stede Goes Unpunished, book 4 in the Caribbean Chronicle series, is another winner.
A little more:
It’s 1717 and Ricky finds himself aboard a ship owned by Stede Bonnet, a rich sugar plantation owner who thought becoming a pirate might be a fun way to live out the rest of his life. Bonnet, in the midst of a midlife crisis, decides to abandon his cushy-life, kids, and wife, to become a pirate. It does not go well. As they set sail from Barbados and slant west towards the North American coast, Bonnet’s crew runs afoul of the British Royal Navy and is put to the test when they encounter a heavily-armed warship.
As a stowaway aboard the Revenge, Ricky fields questions from an overly suspicious crew that wishes to know how a boy with such little sailing experience knows so much about piracy. While battling feelings of guilt, homesickness, and fear of being found out, Ricky, narrowly avoids joining mutineers. Soon, however, he finds himself guilty by association when Bonnet’s crew threatens to cast the pompous captain-owner overboard.
Weeks later, as the threat of capture by the British Royal Navy looms, Blackbeard and Bonnet hatch a plan to join forces. Off Top Sail inlet (Beaufort, NC), the fleet runs aground, and Blackbeard maroons Bonnet and his men near Lookout Woods. Charged with saving Bonnet from being found guilty of piracy, this turn of events proves disastrous for Ricky.
Based on the true events of Bonnet’s adventures, No Good Stede Goes Unpunished blends adventure, humor, and historical accuracy into a timely pirate yarn. Fans of “Our Flag Means Death” will enjoy the antics and action of this time-travel fantasy.
**Parents can trust the Caribbean Chronicles Series. There is no sexual dialogue or situations, violence, or strong language, only positive moral values… and a wee bit of humor.
Snarky humor. I’ve read many of Eddie Jones’s books and love the way he combines off-beat humor, adventure, and excitement amidst a great plot and setting. In this story, he looks at the life of pirate Stede Bonnet. The book is historically accurate, doesn’t glorify evil, and is a fast read. Perfect for any middle-grade or young adult reader in your family.
Want to follow Ricky’s adventures in order? Book 1 is Curse of the Black Avenger and in it, you’ll learn the secret of Ricky’s ability to time travel. I believe you’ll enjoy this 5-book series as much as I did…
