For the discerning (read: cheap and broke) reader, the book Lone Star Planet has several things going for it. You can find it free on the web, both in written and audio form. It is one of several books by the same author that are also free on the web. The books are extremely amusing and science fiction classics, so you can probably find print copies.
The content is very politically incorrect (better hide your copy before the government finds and burns it or deletes the book from the internet).
But best of all, this book challenges pretty much every possible view of how politics should be run and thus can lead to a great deal of discussion if read together as a family. Did I mention it was amusing?
But Lone Star Planet isn’t a kid’s book. Reading through it will take time and explanations. Indeed, the parents themselves may need to look a few things up. But the effort will be well worth it. This book has depth.
Mind you, I don’t think most people will end their time reading this book thinking that it is actually a good thing to shoot politicians… however much I might hope that to be the case. (JK) But they might well gain an understanding, along with how important barbecue is, of how important politics really is, and how fundamental to our actual lives. Or, rather, how many fundamental things that politics addresses that are important to our life.

Or maybe not. But there’s a good gunfight at the end of the book!
