Hello, Friday Fiction Friends! I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. For me, the dinners and parties began around the middle of November and continue through New Year’s Day. Mostly family and church and good times with good people and an awesome spread of snacks, main dishes, sides, and desserts. Plus presents, excited children, Christmas lights, and good movies and books.
Yes, you knew I’d have to bring the subject around to literature, didn’t you? To me, Christmas is about hope. The hope of an old year ending, and a New Year beginning. The hope long ago of a child born in Bethlehem, who became a Messiah for the world. Hope is ingrained in every aspect of this holiday season. So, I want the books I read and movies I watch to be filled with hope, happily ever after hope during Christmas time.
What books/movies do I take in this time of year?
- A Christmas Carol. The book and the movies are great. Hope-filled with a happy ending that gets me every time. There are so many spin-offs of the original Charles Dickens classic. And I’m sure you can find one that suits you too.
- The Man Who Invented Christmas. While I haven’t read the book yet, I absolutely loved the movie about Charles Dickens and have the book on my TBR list. Take time in the next few weeks to check out this movie. And let me know how much you love it too. 🙂
- A Christmas Story. My children and grands love this movie and we even went to see the story at ICE! A Christmas Story which was an ice-carved movie scene walk-through in Nashville. This year is Frosty the Snowman which I’m sure is grand as well.
- Home Alone. Yes, I know at heart it’s a little cheesy but for some reason, I’ve watched it many times. Again, it’s probably the happy ending.
- God Bless Us Every One: A Contemporary Christmas Novella. This little gem by Eva Marie Everson is a wonderful look at a disappointed woman’s study of A Christmas Carol and its message.
- Cartoons. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Polar Express, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and of course, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Love my cartoons…
I particularly feel a need for some extra hope this year, as I’m sure some of you do. That inner strength that says we can make it through the difficult times and embrace joy and sadness together. If you’d like to know more about the source of my hope, go to the drop-down menu under my home page to The Most Important Thing.
Okay, friends. I want to know. What holiday books and movies are you reading and watching this year? A good Hallmark movie? Or maybe even a children’s book that blessed your heart. Let me know in the comments…
