By Suzy Parish
As an author, I relate to the protagonist’s frustration in finding time to write. The main character is a one-time-published author whose greatest fear is becoming a one-hit-wonder.
She is given time alone by her husband in a cabin to complete her next novel. Away from the demands of children and running a household, the novelist slips into the world of her protagonist, the dreamer Lucia.
The parallel world of Lucia mirrors the fears of the author, fears of not being loved or accepted. Along the writing journey, the author encounters some colorful local characters. The beekeeper is especially memorable.
This book is at once tragic and winsome. Keener’s writing is, as always, engaging and brilliant.
I hope you find time to read Light on Glass.~ Suzy Parish
The back-cover copy reads:
A failed author turned stay-at-home mom snaps. Tossing her yoga pants and ditching her carpool, she escapes suburban life to write the next Great American Novel… or at least, finish a draft. In a secluded mountain cabin with nothing but her laptop and an endless supply of coffee, she writes the story of Lucia, a faithful woman from the eighteenth century who’s determined to live life by her own rules. But the eccentric locals, a stream of new story ideas, and a suitcase full of doubt threaten to sabotage the book. Can she push through to resurrect her dreams or does being a mom mean leaving it all behind? Alternating between laugh-out-loud and ugly-cry inducing moments, Light on Glass is a humorous and heartbreaking look at writing, motherhood, and the love we leave behind.
