Isn’t it fun when you find a new writer to read? I am excited about Kendra Elliot, author of several books in the romance/suspense/mystery genre. I recently finished A Merciful Death, the story of FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick. Set in rural Oregon, Mercy returns to her small hometown after a fifteen-year absence to investigate murders of survivalists, people prepared for what they see as the inevitable downfall of the government. While struggling to overcome childhood trauma and family rifts, Mercy meets police Chief Truman Daly. Daly is facing his own demons from a fatal explosion. A tentative romance ensues. Oh, and more people get killed, their weapons caches are stolen. Is there a homegrown terrorist ready to strike in Eagle’s Nest, Oregon?
Most of the reviews of this book were polarized. People either loved Mercy or hated her, or felt too much time was spent explaining the survivalist/prepper mindset. I loved the book. It is the start of a series so I understand the author wanting to set up future books. We learned a little about Mercy and Truman, but you can tell we are just starting on this journey with these characters. I look forward to getting the other books and following Mercy and Truman on their adventures.
For Kindle users, all of Kendra Elliot’s books are available on Kindle Unlimited!

A Merciful Death (Mercy Kilpatrick Book 1) by [Elliot, Kendra]

FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land—and off the grid—in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon.

Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.

Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout…
