I love words. I mean, go figure, I’m a writer so of course I adore words. But today I’m talking about words of encouragement.
When you hear, read, or catch a glimpse of a phrase that helps you through your day.
I had such a day a while back. I was struggling big time and decided I would stop at our local coffee shop, The Local Grind, and order my go-to vanilla latte and a toasted bagel. What could be better than coffee and bread? After a short wait, the young lady handed me my order and I hurried to my car. When I sat, I glanced at the cup which was wrapped in a hand-painted coffee sleeve. It read: Keep Going.
I could have cried. What simple advice. Out of all the different sleeves they created, mine had the perfect message for me. And it gave me hope on a day when I wondered if all the hope had packed up and left my little part of the world.
But it hadn’t. And I could keep going…
How about you?
Have you had a small word of encouragement help you out during a difficult time? I’d love to hear about your experience…
I’ve shared this often, but, I have a sticky note taped to my computer that says “PRAY FIRST”. Those two words have great impact. 🙂 Have a blessed day!
That’s a great idea, Melissa. ❤️
I’ve had trouble lately with depression. My sister sent me this poem and said, “Just do the next thing.” So I didn’t look any farther ahead than my next action. That way, I quit feeling overwhelmed.
From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: “DO THE NEXT THING.”
Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing
Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.
Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing.
Thank you for sharing, JPC. What a beautiful poem. Depression is so difficult, especially in the winter months for me.
