One Way is a story that travels down a dark road, and that road goes only….ONE WAY.
Jeff Lane’s One Way informs the reader of the main character’s outcome, Barry within the first few moments of the opening. Lane then travels that dark, isolated road toward that conclusion allowing the reader to connect to both Barry and his devoted wife, Jenny. Along the way, Lane introduces two creepy and spine-chilling bad guys who bring about Barry’s fate.
The audiobook is read by Lane himself, which almost always makes an audiobook more enjoyable. Lane is a great narrator and voices his characters well, especially Jedidiah who is a very well rounded and background rich character.
As the story progressed, I appreciated that Lane kept Barry an ordinary man with a common existence as just that. Though Barry is thrust into an all-out escape for his life, Lane avoided making Barry suddenly capable of surprising combative or tactical skill. This makes him more relatable and believable as a character.
Many times in the story, Lane brought me to tears with Jenny’s loss and grief as she dealt with life as a widow. Throughout her journey, I listened with anticipation as she came to realize that possibly there could be fate-altering power in love.
To add to the gripping game of cat and mouse, Lane ties in a mind-bending paradox linking both science fiction and the unconditional depth of loyalty, and sacrifice of true love. This, in my opinion, makes his story likable to anyone who enjoys thrillers, science fiction, or maybe romantic suspense.
If you could travel back in time to change your fate, would you? Or are the events of your destiny only capable of going one way? Give Lane’s book a read and find out…..or better yet give it a listen, especially if you’re traveling a dark and isolated road.
Barry Griffith doesn’t know it yet, but tonight is the night fate has chosen to be the night of his death… his murder. At a gas station in the middle of nowhere, late at night, his wife Jenny appears… no car… no coat and looking older than when he saw her last. That’s because this is not the woman he received a good-bye kiss from this morning. This woman has been a widow for over four years and has made an impossible journey back in time to try to stop her husband’s murder. Will they be able to escape the killers or does fate only have one plan… one possible outcome… ONE WAY?
